10 Ways To Create A Focal Point

Living Room Focal Point

Every well-designed space needs a focal point.

The focal point is the anchor spot in a room and it's where your eye is naturally drawn when entering a space.

When the eye intuitively spots a focal point it gives you an opportunity to let the full aesthetic and impact of the space sink in.

In that brief moment you'll also interpret how the space functions and what activities it's used for.

Without a clear focal point the room can feel unfinished, uncomfortable or confusing.

In this post, you’ll get 10 ideas full of tools and guidance to help you get you started creating focal points in your home that'll truly pull the entire space together.

1. Natural Focal Point

Your room may have an existing focal point you can work with like a beautiful fireplace, a window with a great view or an exposed brick wall. If you have a natural focal point, furniture is typically grouped around that point, facing the focal point or with its lines leading toward a focal point.

2. Feature Wall

Find a blank wall and get to work. You can use photos, a collection, mirrors, artwork, or a sculpture. This can be one large item (such as a piece of artwork) or a collage of smaller items that make a statement when grouped together.

3. Architectural Feature

A central element, like a fireplace, can help you position your furniture in a room. Getting the size of the architectural element right in the room is vital. If it's too big, it can look and feel uncomfortable. If it's too small, your furniture will become the focal point, taking away from the main feature.

4. Artwork

Art can create an instant focal point that allows the rest of the room to shine. The size and tone of your art are important. Choose a painting with the appropriate scale for your space, in tones that stand out and draw the eye in but don't clash with the rest of the room. One large, bold piece of art looks fantastic against a neutral wall and furniture. A series of prints can make an impact too, whether they're framed identically or have an eclectic mix of frames.

5. Color

Color has the power to completely transform a space. Sometimes simply painting a wall can create the perfect focal point. It easily sets the area apart from others in the room and can have a lasting impact.

6. Contrast

Contrast can be created in many ways, but it's used to both separate and unify a space at once. Here a soft wood paneled wall contrasts with the white walls to create a lovely, calming focal point. When you have a great view, use your home's architecture to emphasize it and make it as big and grand as possible.

7. Standout Piece of Furniture

Positioning a bright and/or special piece of furniture in the room can easily draw people in. Make sure to pair it with pieces that compliment and don't detract from the focal piece.

8. Size

Have you ever walked into a room with a giant piece of art or grand floor to ceiling windows? Those are two ways you can use size to create your focal point. Juxtaposing large with small makes for a dramatic statement.

9. Texture

Add texture to create a focal point in a monochromatic color scheme, giving your room character and depth. Smooth, shiny objects will give off a cool vibe, while soft, raised textures add more warmth.

10. Pattern

Pattern can create a striking focal point. If a room is lacking in architectural features, use a more permanent, patterned finish — like tile or stone — as a bold statement.
